The Jensen Family Kids' Study Room

The Jensen Family’s kids’ study room was an absolute dream to organize—a space that was already bright and airy with beautiful, classic furnishings. Our goal was to bring in pops of color while maintaining the elegance of the space, ensuring it remained kid-friendly, playful, and practical.

Organizing a Kids' Study Room

1. Baskets & Hidden Labels for a Tidy Look

To keep everything tidy yet visually appealing, we opted for honey rattan baskets from The Container Store. These roomy baskets fit the space perfectly and provided plenty of storage for crafts and school supplies. To maintain order while keeping labels discreet, we used clear acrylic bin clips with white writing, a simple yet effective way to identify what’s inside each basket without disrupting the clean aesthetic.

2. Color-Coded Book Organization

One of the biggest transformations in this study space was the book organization. We sorted all the children’s books by color, a method we at Reset Your Nest love for kids’ spaces. A lot of time we find that it’s hard to find any rhyme or reason to sorting your books anyway, especially for kids. Organizing books by color not only creates a beautiful, cohesive look, but it also helps kids learn where their books belong. Many children recognize their books by the color of the spine rather than the title, making this system both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

For chapter books, we kept them together as sets, supported by acrylic bookends with rubber stoppers to prevent slipping. Paperback books, which tend to be flimsy, found a home in magazine holders—making them easier for little hands to browse through. Since the shelving in this space was fixed, we used cane magazine holders on each side of the study area—one for each child. These held extra paperbacks, plus completed homework and art projects storage (a temporary spot before they’re moved to a more permanent storage place).

3. Craft Storage That Works

The heart of any kids’ study space is often the craft supplies, and we wanted to create a system that was both accessible and organized. Inside the Ori Rattan bins, we used tall SmartStore inserts to neatly separate different types of materials, from Cricut supplies for mom to Play-Doh and kids’ craft essentials.

For smaller items like paints, puff paints, and specialty art supplies, we used to 16-inch acrylic bins inside the upper and lower cabinets. These kept messier materials within reach but out of the hands of little ones.

To make crafting even easier, we introduced a white caddy with a wood handle and removable inserts, creating custom caddies for each child. This allowed for easy transport and customization based on their current projects.

4. A Space That Feels Inspiring

Beyond organization, we wanted this study to feel inspiring. We left space to display a few already-built LEGO creations, and we carefully selected some of the most charming books to keep open on display shelves. The study had designated his-and-her sides, so we added a touch of personalization to each.

5. Takeaways for Any Kids’ Study Space

Not every home has the luxury of a large kids’ study room, but the principles we used here can apply to any space:

  • Declutter and categorize: Keep only the craft and school supplies that your kids actually use.

  • Utilize vertical storage: Store less frequently used items (and crafts that need parental supervision) on higher shelves.

  • Combine open and closed storage: Shelves can hold books and baskets, while cabinets keep messier items out of sight.

  • Be creative with space: In smaller rooms, consider a rolling craft cart that can be tucked away or stackable bins for easy access.

  • Optimize bulky storage: Swap out large, awkward boxes for zipper pouches to make craft kits more manageable.

The Jensen kids' study room is now a harmonious blend of beauty and function—a space where creativity can flourish while staying effortlessly organized.
